Dual currency: Riel and Dollar
In Cambodia, two currencies coexist: the Cambodian riel (KHR) and the US dollar (USD). This coexistence is often referred to as a "dual currency" system.
The Riel for small purchases
The riel is mainly used for small transactions. Local vendors, markets and small stores often prefer the riel.
Common riel denominations are: 500 riels, 1000 riels, 2000 riels, 5000 riels, 10000 riels.
The Dollar for bigger transactions
For bigger payments, such as for hotels, restaurants or stores, the US dollar is widely used. Most prices are displayed in dollars, and it's often more convenient to pay that way. Bills from $1 to $50 are very common and useful for everyday purchases.
Coins are not used in Cambodia. Instead, riels are often used to supplement dollar amounts, much like our centimes. So don't be surprised if you're given change with a combination of dollar bills and riels - it's perfectly normal!
This duality allows Cambodians to profit from the stability of the dollar while using their local currency for day-to-day transactions. It also facilitates tourism, as visitors are often more familiar with the dollar.
