I won't hide it from you: Phnom Penh Safari is not a must-do in the capital. But if you're already planning a day at the Garden City Water Park right next door, it's a great opportunity to stop by at opening time.

The park is fairly large, but the visit won't take more than half a day, especially if you skip some of the shows. To be honest, some areas may look a little neglected — more a question of limited means than lack of care, I think — and some animals may seem sad. You'll still have a good time there.

My highlights: the parrot show, surprisingly well done, and above all feeding the giraffes — getting that close is a truly exceptional experience. And everywhere in the park, the monkeys' calls follow you around: instant change of scenery.

For adults the appeal is fairly limited, but kids are always a great audience for this kind of place — an ideal family outing to combine with other things to do in Phnom Penh.

Tested tip: I got a special rate with a combo ticket for the zoo + water park. So plan it in that order: the safari at opening time (before the heat kicks in), then the afternoon cooling off at the Garden City Water Park.

Final tips from the field: protect yourself from the sun and drink water regularly — shade is scarce during the hottest hours. To plan your trip to the north of the city, check my Phnom Penh transport guide.
